So this morning I had planned on running this little 5K, the "Get Your Rear in Gear 5K", which benefits colon cancer education etc... So the problem is that I did a 13.5 miler yesterday morning to the top of Mount Bonnell no less, and stuck with DV and Joseph. We were definitely the "fast runners" on the day.
So then I had this dream last night that I was walking to the race and realized that I still had my work pants on, and I had this pair of stretchy shorts in my other hand. I couldn't find a place to change and took my pants off in the street. Then I couldn't get the stretchy pants on. My foot kept sticking in the stretchy leg and wouldn't go through! Btw, if you've ever tried to put on stretchy pants, which um...I have, this does happen. So I was naked in the street struggling with stretchy pants. Not pretty! It's like one of those dreams where you show up to school in your underwear.
OK, so on with the race. In the real world, at least getting to the race was a lot easier. I didn't see anybody I knew from Gilbert's Gazelles, so I figured the competition level would be pretty low. The weather was great to run a fast race, nice and cool, and the course wasn't too hilly. So I decided to listen to Gilbert for once and start a little slow and pick it up. Here's the problem....I had no legs left after yesterday's long run! We started off with four of us at the front, which quickly became two of us as we approached mile 1. That mile went at about 5:50, the slowest first mile I've run in any race or practice in a while. But the bad part was that my legs were already hurting. I knew I didn't have any juice and just tried to hold steady. Really, the guy that won didn't do anything drastic, he just held pace and I faded to about 6 minutes a mile on mile 2 and then probably 6:10 on mile 3 and .1. Even at my slowed pace, I saw the guys behind me fading into the distance, so I just chilled and decided to be happy with my position.
My final time was a very slow and disappointing 18:40. Oh yeah, and I forgot to turn in my timing chip, so I have to figure out what to do with that now. But here's the crazy thing: the run was good enough for 2nd place! Woohoo! And the cherry on top was that the race had this giant "colon tunnel" that you could walk through. Very cool.
