Crystal Metronome

Just FYI, if you are a runner, and like myself want a metronome to help keep your cadence, I would recommend this little product:  Crystal Metronome.  It’s a very simple little app that lets you set a beats per minute (bpm) rate.  You can then output it to an MP3, drop it on your very small MP3 player/IPod, and set it to repeat.  For running I set it to 180 bpm.  You can also select from some different sounds for the beats like a high-hat or wood block.  A lot of Pose or Chi runners will use these little clip-on...

Zilker and Silicon Labs Relays

This time of year is really cool because there are a couple of relays that are very popular in town.  Most road races are individual, so it's pretty awesome to get a team of 4 or 5 people together and go after it.  The first event was the Zilker Relays.  This is a 10 mile relay of 4 people.  So each person gets a 2.5 mile leg.  This is a great distance because it's short enough to make it accessible to a lot of people and you can pretty much go all out on it and not...

Get Your Rear in Gear

So this morning I had planned on running this little 5K, the "Get Your Rear in Gear 5K", which benefits colon cancer education etc...  So the problem is that I did a 13.5 miler yesterday morning to the top of Mount Bonnell no less, and stuck with DV and Joseph.  We were definitely the "fast runners" on the day.  So then I had this dream last night that I was walking to the race and realized that I still had my work pants on, and I had this pair of stretchy shorts in my other hand.  I couldn't...

Lil' Longhorn 5K

Well, I did my first 5K this morning since running with Gilbert's Gazelles, and it was interesting for several reasons.  The good news is that I finished 2nd overall (woohoo!), the downside being that there was really only one fast runner and he smoked me(dang!)  It was really a community fun-run so the competition level was pretty low, but any time I can race and be timed, it's a good experience. I woke up hoping to feel good.  In fact, I felt pretty poor.  My outside right knee was really stiff from Thursdays' track run.  My left inside...

3M Half Marathon

Today was the 3M half marathon.  What a day!  I got up at 4:50 on about 4 hours of sleep (tossed and turned like I always do before events).  This is my first running event since splitting the Austin marathon 5 or 6 years ago.  I slugged a protein shake w/ banana, got in the car and headed north.  It didn't take me nearly as long as I thought to make it up north with no traffic, which was great because I had plenty of time to "do ma thang etc..." before the race started.  I saw some Gazelles, and...

Meriden Run #1

I did my first run at Meriden today with Gilbert's Gazelles.  This was a pretty intense run.  We did 5 laps of the approximately 1K loop.  I ran together with Roger, Chris and Phil.  The up and downs are pretty difficult.  Running down the steep incline towards the end on Meriden, I could hear my feet slapping the pavement.  I need to figure out how to mellow that out.  Chris was dropping the pain on us basically at will, but it's always good to have a rabbit.  Then afterwards, he skipped the other exercises.  That's not even fair.  ...

Long Run Today

I did my first really long run in a while today.  "Long" is a relative term, but today's run was around 14 miles.  I felt really good almost the whole time.  I didn't run very fast after Thursday's "tempo run", which was intense, probably 7.5 minute miles on average.  I was still a little sore from the training last week.  I'm really just getting back into the running "stride".  The Thursday tempo run is basically a 4 mile "race" with all of the guys/gals in the group.  It was my first tempo run.  I run with Gilbert's Gazelles...
